More Details in Baby Death

University of Virginia Police are investigating the tragic death of a baby. It happened over the weekend.

Police sources tell us this tragedy could have been prevented, and that the baby was accidentally left unattended inside a car for an extended period of time.

It was around 4PM on Friday when paramedics were called to the Judge Advocate parking lot on UVa grounds. When they arrived, the baby was not breathing. The police report said the infant was in cardiac arrest. Itís not clear how long the baby had been in the car, but weíre told the mother was at the scene.

According to our meteorologists, it was 67 degrees at its hottest on Friday. Doctors said even in 60 to 70 degree weather, cars could heat to dangerous levels.

An autopsy was performed on the baby in Richmond on Monday.

We're also told itís routine, but the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office has been consulted in this case. No charges have been filed against the mother or anyone else at this time.

Investigators are now waiting on those autopsy results to determine exactly how the baby died.

The 9-month-old infant who died in a University of Virginia parking lot Friday perished because of heat exposure, UVa police said today.

A preliminary report from the state medical examinerís office indicates that Bryce Balfour died from hyperthermia, police said.

Authorities responding to an emergency call Friday afternoon found Balfour in a parking lot near the Judge Advocate Generalís school.

The babyís mother was present when police arrived, according to Capt. Michael Coleman of the UVa police.

Coleman wouldnít say Wednesday whether the child was inside a vehicle. No one has been charged in connection with the death, but the investigation is still open.

UVa police are consulting with Charlottesville prosecutors to determine if charges should be filed.

Police did not release any other information about the case.
