Baby girl, left in car for hours, found dead at Doral Academy

Miami Herald Staff Report

A baby girl was found dead in a car where she had accidentally been left for as long as nine hours.

The discovery was made Tuesday evening at Doral Academy Preparatory School in West Miami-Dade.

Police said the 6-month-old’s father was supposed to have dropped her off at a daycare center about 9 a.m. Tuesday, but apparently forgot she was in the car and went about his day.

The unidentified father dropped off older children at Doral Academy, 2450 NW 97th Ave., which is in the news this week because a former student, Christian Aguilar, 18, is missing in Gainesville, where he is a freshman at the University of Florida.

The father went to work, and left the baby in its restraining seat in the back seat of the car, Miami-Dade police said.

It was unclear Tuesday night where the car was parked during the day. The high temperature Tuesday in Miami was 88 degrees. If the car was parked in the open, it could have been much hotter inside.

About 5:45 p.m. — more than nine hours after placing the baby in its seat — the father left work and drove back to Doral Academy. When the child’s brother climbed into the back seat, he discovered the body.

The baby was taken to Miami Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police were called to the school, and the investigation continued Tuesday night. The baby’s father told detectives it was not part of his routine to care for the baby.

No charges were immediately filed.
