woman was arrested in the death of her 5-month-old son, who is believed to have
suffered heat-related injuries after being left alone in a van for hours, Globe,
AZ police said Thursday.
Rendi L. Garcia, 25, was booked Wednesday for investigation of manslaughter, use of a minor in a drug offense, six counts of child abuse and use of dangerous drugs, said Detective Gabriel Guerrero of the Globe Police Department.
Guerrero said Garcia tested positive for methamphetamine and used the drug before she dropped off her five other children at school and then left her infant son in a van.
Garcia slept in the van briefly with her son before she returned to her home and slept through the day, Guerrero said. Child Protective Services arrived at Garcia's residence because her children weren't picked up after school and found the infant in the vehicle.
CPS took custody of her other children, who range in age from 1 to 8 years old. A 14-year-old baby sitter was detained by police in the investigation.
She was picked up for alleged use of dangerous drugs and then released to a parent.
