A 1-year-old girl died today after being found in a car in unincorporated Belleville, said Capt. Steve Johnson of the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl was found about 3:15 p.m. in the 2900 block of South Belt West. She was not responsive and not breathing when the ambulance arrived, Johnson said. The baby was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The temperature in Belleville was 89 degrees at 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities were not releasing any further information late Wednesday, but said members of the child’s family were being interviewed. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning. Johnson said more information will likely be released later.
