An 8-month-old boy died Friday after his mother apparently left the child in her car while she was at work during the day, Alexandria police said.

Alexandria police were called to Inova Alexandria to investigate an unresponsive child that was brought to the hospital just after 4 p.m., said Lt. Mark Bergin, a spokesman. The child’s mother told hospital staff that she drove the child from Alexandria to her job in Arlington sometime Friday morning and when she was driving home, the mother realized the child was still in the car.

Mother drove to work in Arlington and noticed her 8-month-old son was unresponsive on commute home.

The mother found him unresponsive and immediately took him to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The child was not immediately identified.

Temperatures in Northern Virginia reached nearly 90 degrees in most areas Friday.

Arlington police are investigating the circumstances of the case, Alexandria and Arlington police said.
